How to Get the Most from HTML Browser Books

1. "Browse" your book in "local mode".

You do not need to be "on line". Using your Internet Explorer®, Firefox®, Safari® or Opera® browser, simply open the beginning file ("index.html" or "README.html" in the "solar" directory) found by selecting "Open File..." under "File" at the top left of your screen, just as you would word processing or any other application.

2. The Navigation Headings

The chapter numbers at the left will light and change chapters when you click them. A round bullet marks the current chapter. If cookies are enabled in your Browser, this book will "remember" your current chapter for the next three months.

3. Units Headings

The reader may elect to have either S.A.E. or Metric units of measurement displayed in the text of the Solar and Wind Atlas by selecting the desired unit.

4. Display Headings

Depending upon one's visual preference, the maps in this text may be displayed with a white or a black background by selecting the "White" or "Black" heading.

5. Automatic Scrolling

The buttons at the bottom of the window will light and change automatic scrolling modes for you. A round bullet marks the currently selected mode. If you find this disconcerting, simply leave the mode at "off" and use the scroll bar at the right of the browser window, just as you ordinarily do when viewing web pages.

6. Background Music "Toggles"

You can start and stop background music as you wish. There are some 496 different musical selections which you may select. Each time you select "Music On", a random offering of musical selections in the genre you have chosen will be selected for you. You may change the style of instrumentation and volume at any time. If you wish to change the selection, simply turn the music off and then turn it on again to select a different random melody. The selections are designed to provide pleasant background music to read by.

Troubleshooting:
  1. The images are not displaying: If the images do not display when you open "index.html" after you have decompressed the zipped or stuffed file:
    1. Be sure that your preferences for the unzipping utility have not "folded" the file names into upper case. All file names and image files should have lowercase names.
    2. If your unzipping utility has a switch for recursive files, be sure that the -r switch (in preferences) is set.
  2. Playing the musical selections: For music to be played, you'll need QuickTime® Liveaudio®, Yamaha® Midplug for XG, Crescendo!®, or other MIDI file playback plugin in the plugins folder for your browser. (We all hear differently and you may want to experiment with thevarious music plugins to see which suits your ear the best)
  3. Use of cookies in this book: In order for your book to "remember" what chapter you are reading, you need to enable "Cookies" in your browser - at least partially. You can disable them for web surfing and still accept them when reading this book -- probably a good idea.
    1. Safari®: In "Preferences..." (under "Safari" at the upper left of your screen), select "Security" and click the radio button labeled "Only from sites you navigate to", which will leave the decision in your control.
    2. Firefox®: In "Preferences..." (under "Firefox" at the upper left of your screen), select "Privacy" and turn cookies on, but select the "Ask me every time" checkbox, which will leave the decision up to you.
    3. Opera®: In "Preferences..." (under "Opera" at the upper left of your screen), select "Advanced", highlight the "Cookies" selection at the left of the window; then click the "Accept cookies" radio button, but check the "Ask me before accepting cookies" checkbox, which will leave the decision up to you.
    4. Explorer®: In "Preferences..." (under "Explorer" at the upper left of your screen), select "Cookies" and select the appropriate option for your surfing from the selections at "When receiving cookies:".
